High School Musical — East High Wildcats
The method I used to get a coaching job at East High
Let’s do a disclaimer right away. The name of the actual school is East High Leopards. Yep, same logo, just a different name. They kept everything else the same for the movie.
Now that your childhood is crushed a little, I hope it’s fine for me to move on.
To make things better, you might be pleased to know they still have Sharpay’s pink locker.
Anyways, the rumors are true, I coached basketball at the famous high school, East High, home of the “Wildcats.”
There were many steps for me to get to this position.
After living in Salt Lake City, UT for a few months, I had no idea that I lived right down the street from East High.
It wasn’t until a co-worker told me that the school was in Utah, and showed me the location that I realized I live a block away.
I was longing for something to give my time to outside of work. Something where I could feel I was making a difference.
First point: You ask and you shall receive. I was asking… begging even, for something to give my life a little purpose. Just ask. Then listen.
I jumped on this opportunity as soon as possible, taking it as a sign. I was not going to stop by any means necessary.
I made a resume of my basketball experience that included my high school and college years, statistics, and previous coaches (who were some of the best) and just simply asked the Athletic Director in the email if they needed some help at open-gym.
The next day the Athletic Director replied stating that he would forward the email to the Head Coach, who then asked me to come stop by for the open gyms’ scheduled the week before try-outs.
Second point: This is what they mean by doing what you love and you never work a day in your life. I just wanted to do this because I missed the game of basketball after college, and I wanted to make a difference in some young kids' lives. I knew I was meant to do this, so I oversold myself.
I went to the open gym as instructed and immediately felt at home. It was the energy of the East High Wildcats. I could literally feel “Get Your Head in the Game” in my veins.
No, but really, all jokes aside, the energy was contagious.
Third point: You know you’re on the right path when it just feels right.
After a week of showing up at open gyms, the coach pulled me aside and said, “The kids really love you, we need a freshman basketball coach this season if you’re interested.
This began my 12 to 13-hour work days at Goldman Sachs and then heading straight to basketball practice.
I loved every minute of it.
Fourth point: When you do something that you love, there is no time and there is no grind, it’s just love.
So, how did I get here? Sure, I sent an email to the Athletic Director, but to me, it was much bigger than that.
Let’s review the first point I made.
Ask and you shall receive. I asked for more purpose, I listened to my co-worker talking about East High as a sign.
It was always meant for me to do this, I just had to listen to the guidance.
Is there anything whispering (or perhaps yelling) at you to try… maybe you just have to take one small step, or send one email like me?
It is only after that small step can you go on to the other points to a more fulfilling life.
The second point was to do what you love. Easier said than done. But, do you know what you love? Do you know what you were obsessed with as a kid before adults put limitations on you, or wanted you to take a certain career path?
Doing what you love always finds its way as soon as you stop resisting and allow.
Once you allow, you go into the third point, everything will feel right and you will be in flow. You will have the synchronicities of the world in your favor. You listened once, now you have built that trust to do it again.
That is what makes an enjoyable life because now you have reached the fourth point. No grind, no time, just love.
Now life is truly worth living.
How can you start living in alignment? Stop. Listen. Act.
Remember, what lights you up is also looking for you. It’s just waiting for you to make the first move.
